I worked at CEB

Pros

Good learning curve especially for individuals starting their career. A lot of responsibility handed out at a very junior level with promotions given with results not time.

Cons

Management is terrible with communication and holds its primary obligation to shareholders and profits and not people. Promotions can be promised and subsequently delayed. It is a very transient culture not as supportive as it could be in retaining talent. Pay is lower than average for a good consulting services firm (more at the junior level and except for sales).

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat people better and make a greater effort to retain high performers not just on the sales side.

    Pros

Two things: you'll work with some very talented, hard-working people, and you'll get more opportunity to interact with senior corporate executives than at any equivalent role in banking or consulting.

    Cons

Too many to list in a brief review. The mos critical ones are: culture rife with politics; views itself as a meritocracy but is not even close to that in practice; senior management is not up to the task of leading this company; company takes advantage of its clients in pricing, product development, research; company expects the highest levels of engagement but does almost nothing to earn it; strongest performers get "rewarded" by being asked to take on much more responsibility without commensurate increases in title or salary.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

"Lean in" - CEB speak for "work harder" - is not a strategy. Reinvest in the core product that made you great - awesome research - and stop diverting investment to things like tools. Recognize that executive meetings (AERs in my day) are the single most valuable lever you have to drive renewals. Research and meetings have always been your competitive advantage - everything else is just a shiny object, and is a minor part of the customer value proposition at best. Ask yourself why so much talent left voluntarily - and why many people you would have liked to have kept took the VSP. Put fewer people into sales, and more people into product and service. If you have a better product to sell, you won't need nearly as many people to make your revenue number.
