Personal success very tied to direct manager competency, or lack thereof.

I worked at CGI full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Can be entrepreneurial, if you have the right manager. Company has been growing so good for personal growth, although need to navigate through company politics as with any very large company. Good place for someone willing to relocate to take advantage of global positions.

    Cons

Any chance to be entrepreneurial is heavily tied to personal or team billability with VERY high targets.
Limited investment made in IP, so IP eventually becomes much less competitive in vast majority of cases.
Acquisitions have been the growth driver; limited (no) organic growth.
Matrix management structure allows for redundant roles in account management roles. Redundancy can lead to internal conflicts.
Structure did not incent business units to work with each other where specific team skill sets (e.g. transactional websites and user experience) could be levered. Almost always led to each business unit trying to do things on their own, even if their lack of experience could be overcome by using a different unit's more specific experience.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fix business unit incentives so all business units are rewarded for using centers of excellence, globally, perhaps by investing in building and staffing these centers.
If acquiring IP, keep investing in it or create a specific action plan to migrate customers.
Eliminate the potential for business units to work independently of each other in large accounts; should be a single P&L owner (not just a figurehead).
P&L decisions should not negatively impact business units providing a service if a decision hurting that business unit's P&L is a good decision for the overall account relationshp (e.g. allow robbing from Peter to pay Paul).
For a P&L lead taking a new position, they should not be penalized for a non-profitable deal sold by a predecessor. Otherwise, they are incorrectly incented to provide less or inferior service to drive costs down at the expense of customer satisfaction.
Customer satisfaction survey process should not become a "sales job" by a delivery business unit.

    Pros

Some of the people at CGI are absolutely amazing! Smart, driven, excited....but that is just when they've been here less than six months.

    Cons

Canada, Canada, Canada. Socialism is rampant within CGI. If you enjoy picking up the slack for someone else and they still get the same pay and bonus you do, then this is the place for you. Mediocrity within the employee base makes some groups not receive a decent bonus because we're making up the slack of other poor performers. The Healthcare.gov issue is starting to take its toll within the ranks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I don't think they'll listen. It is sort of my way or the highway here.
