I have been working at CHOC Children's full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Mission. The organization is really all about the kids. The people can be really great.

    Cons

Bad leaders are allowed to be abusive to staff. Several have HORRIBLE and well known reputations and it's all permitted.Executives are too busy trying to keep up appearances that no one has the courage to step forward and call their peers on bad behavior.

If you like to be micromanaged and not allowed to think for yourself, then you'll be very happy here. If you like watching highly motivated and skilled people not allowed to do their jobs because they might outpeform or outshine their leaders then you'll love it here. If you like watching redundant and time wasting decisions made again and again and again, this will be the best place for you. If you like spending more time on politics than actually devoting time to the mission, then consider a position at CHOC.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The reason this place keeps going is because the nurses and doctors care too much and provide the very best care. But, CHOC will always be held back by its leadership who are focused on keeping up appearances instead of making sound decisions. Why, why, why do you keep so much deadweight up top? Are all the EMT worth the salaries they make? most of wonder if they're worth even half?? My advice, have the courage to do what's right for the hospital and these kids instead of what's good for your own personal agendas.

I have been working at CHOC Children's full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great doctors and nurses, they really care about the patients

Patient care teams work well together, focus is on getting children better

    Great mission

    Cons

CEO is indecisive and creates a lot of turmoil. It is easy to see that the management team lives in fear of her. All decisions must go through Kim Cripe. Causes delays in every decision. She has big public image and very little visibility in the hospital.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get a CEO who can let her team work. Kim has been at CHOC forever, she is over her head, doesn't trust the leaders and clinicicans. Find someone who can build a team and develop a trusting management team. GET RID OF ALL OF THE CONSULTANTS!
