I have been working at CHOC Children's full-time (more than 8 years)

Pros

colleagues, patients, some of the physicians are great

Cons

Firing and laying off staff every few years because the senior leadership team is not competent. The CEO, CFO, CMO, and VP Marketing have been there for over 20 years. THIS HOSPITAL NEEDS A NEW EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP TEAM NOT MORE STAFF REDUCTIONS.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit sending out appalling emails to leaders and staff about cutting $3.0 million in the 2 months! Take responsibility for your failure to plan and affiliate. UCI is now our competitor and they were our partner, almost all of our patients have Medicaid insurance (where are the PPO/HMO patients), quit letting leaders who speak out for patients leave. Losing the CNO this week should have been the last straw. The board needs to get rid of the lot of you.

    I worked at CHOC Children's full-time

    Pros

Helping children is the best cause anyone could work for.

    Cons

Extremely disfunctional. The company is run by cronies of Kim Cripe, the CEO. Discover her tactics or her surrogates and you're out. Overworked and underpaid is the norm. There is no personal satisfaction when you hear how much money goes to the CEO per year while overall company salaries average 1-2% increase per year if you're lucky. This year the CEO's salary was $1,800,000, up from $1,500,000 last year! That's an 8% increase or enough money to hire 4-5 more nurses! What does she do for all that money? She simply caresses the doners, accepts their donations, and plays politics with the Boards to keep her job. I don't begrudge anyone for being successful but the CHOC employees don't even make industry wages and everyone in executive managment makes far more than industry standards! The question must be asked; Why is CHOC looking for new workers while paying a consulting company a fee for three years advising them where to make personnel cuts? This is for appearances only. They are only replacing managment and technical personnel who have left or have been pushed out . Don't think of working for this company unless you want your life to turn upside down. The other negative comments on this site are truthful. READ THEM CLOSELY! The short positive comments are plants by the company; I know one of them and she is in management working closely with the CEO. If I had researched the company's reputation in the community beforehand, I would never have gone to work for them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Advice to the Board; Open your eyes. The company is being stolen blind while all of you sit around and fail to manage. Get rid of the glad-handers and keep or bring on real Board members who have their own success history which would help the company. Advice to management: Leave while you still have any positive reputation at all! Your time is at hand and the community knows it.

I have been working at CHOC Children's full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Used to be an exciting and progressive organization

    Cons

CHOC has hundreds of jobs posted but has had a company (PRISM) here for three months to identify all the positions that 'need' to be cut. So many rumors and lots of fear. Why does senior leadership keep hiring more VPs? Figure out why the census is so low so you don't have to lay off staff. The budget process is ineffective and designed to make the board think CHOC is making money.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find leaders who can actually make decisions and create a health care system that works for children. How do think it feels having a firm like PRISM here for three months and not knowing if you are going to have a job tomorrow? Find a new senior leadership team that has the expertise to lead through health care reform. Figure out how to get the census back up or merge with another provider.
