Pros

The people at CNA really make going to work an enjoyable experience. There is a good mix between recent college grads and veteran work staff.

Cons

Depending on your interests, working in the IT department of the insurance industry may not be all that exciting.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior management is doing a pretty good job of running the company which has had a successful turnaround from a few years back.

    Pros

Hours are pretty decent. About 8-1.5 hour workday. Abitlity to work from home. To some degree there is flex time. People are great.

    Cons

The salary is middle of the road. Advancement is somewhat difficult, but I think it is like that in most insurance companies. If there is noone leaving at the position above you, then there is nothing available.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To give more feedback, and adress the career track more. Also, there should be point, at least at promotion, where one can renegotiate salary, at least to some extent, and not just be locked in to a percentage increase at what you started at.

An average company, which has a long term vision but still dealing with legacy issues

I have been working at CNA

    Pros

Overall a good company to work for, where team work is promoted. More recently the Executive Management team has done a tremendous job of communicating the companies advantages and flaws and a clear road-map for where the company needs to go.

    Cons

First, the cyclical nature of the Insurance industry results in regular downsizing as the company refocuses on particular lines of business within its portfolio of Property and Casualty business. Secondly, the company's Underwriting and Claims groups have had prior issues resulting in non-sufficient reserves. These inadequte results in the company getting pounded by rating agencies dragging the company lower in rankings amongst its competitors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Until the company executes on its long term vision to focus on Property and Casualty, the remaining legacy issues will require you to fight daily "fires" that need to be addressed. If you understand how insurance works, are a hard worker and intelligent you will not face difficulty in establishing yourself in a leadership position. Take the first quarter to understand the company's legacy issues, long term vision and direction and meet with as many Sr. Management of the groups you will be working with to understand how they run their business and departments. After this, cut through the "rosy picture" and "fluff" and create an aggressive, yet realistic, list of executable tasks that you and your team need to work on - and most importantly, be ready to respond to changes in priorities.
