Culture clashes & cronyism

I worked at CVS Health

Pros

Has average benefits & vacation policies, but have scaled back in recent years resulting in more tenured employees getting fewer vacation days - a real sore spot for those former Caremark employees unaccustomed to retail store-like benefits. A lot of support for charitable activities. Security in working for a Fortune 20 company. Pockets of real talent and great people.

Cons

Bringing together several companies has created severe culture challenges that have not been worked out. Merger of equals with CVS and Caremark was not as advertised - it was an acquisition in which CVS employees were rewarded and most senior level Caremark employees were let go (albeit some with attractive packages). Very hierarchical in which communication flow is tightly managed resulting in lower level employees feeling in the dark and not empowered to make decisions. Significant pockets of cronyism that rewards in-network people making poor business decisions while those not in the network shoulder the blame. Talent management is virtually non-existent - those politically savvy can do well. Those that do well but aren't will get frustrated.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to address the severe culture challenges that still persist years after the acquisition. Focus on the talent, not the politics and reward success & talent, not tenured CVS employees.

    Pros

The insurance benefits are ok. You have to fill all rx at a cvs to qualify for the insurance though.

    Cons

Open 365 days a year. All the upper management really cares about is the pharmancy performance. The front store mgmt gets treated like crap.

CVS has decided that if you have worked for them too long, you will no longer get a raise even with an excellent review!

I have been working at CVS Health

    Pros

Flexebility of schedule, paid holidays, 401k match up to five percent, yearly reviews, sick time, employee discount, always have shifts available

    Cons

No raises for long time employees with excellent yearly reviews. Too many yes men in the ranks of outside managment that only tell the good to their bosses, not the bad. Yearly cuts in hours to staff both the pharmacy and the front stores. More errors due to cuts in hours in the pharmacy. More errors in the pharmacy's because management has decided to force long time employees that have knowledge out with little to no yearly pay raise. While replaceing them with people off of the street with no knowledge of pharmacy. Lack of caring by upper management to how the stores actually run.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management needs to not penny pinch store employees especially in the pharmacy department. You can not hire people off of the street that have the knowledge of how errors occur and why to do things the proper way. It takes time and years to learn the profession, and CVS Management is treating its technicians like they are a dime a dozen. CVS needs to also quit cutting hours. My store had a 15% reduction in technician hours this year. This places a burden on the entire pharmacy that causes each person to do 2 or 3 jobs at one time leading to more errors.
