Pros

Positive changes are underway in IT.

    It's been a positive experience most of the time but definitely has its drawbacks as well.

    I have been working at Cabela's

    Pros

    Benefits package is fairly good. After being at Cabela's for a given amount of time the discount on merchandise is very good. Good opportunities for growth for competent and motivated individuals.

    Cons

    Tough environment for IT. Much of the focus of the company is on merchandising and often the focus on IT comes secondary. Very immature SDLC process. Cabela's definitely has some growing to do.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pay more attention to the talent that we do have. IT culture and Cabela's culture can often have some differences (hunting and fishing isn't necessarily a talented developer's first choice for hobbies) Cabela's is not that unique of a merchandising company. Allow existing technology to give us a competitive edge rather than customizing everything so much.

    I have been working at Cabela's

    Pros

    Employee Discount; Bonus paid every year, even after going public in 2004; Casual clothing OK; Headquarters in a small town, which is good for raising children. IT department adopts new technology. Some training opportunities.

    Cons

    Post "gone public" culture becoming more soul-less, pushing employees harder and harder, leading to very poor work-life balance. Irrational planning, IT project quality measured almost exclusively against arbitrary deadlines. Zero real learning from past problems.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    You have already lost many exceptionally high quality employees, who cared about actual quality, replaced all too often by yes-men. Be honest about issues and trade-offs that are facing the company, but try harder to avoid cutting corners, "fast plus good plus cheap" is not a realistic plan for everything.
