Pros

Very upbeat and potentially fun place to work. If you are an outdoorsy person you will LOVE working here. Very cool products and pretty good employee discount.

Cons

Little to no instruction on how things are to be done. We are currently stocking the store for opening in April and a lot of times you are just told to go do something without being told how to do it....or even worse you will be told how to do it and another manager will come along and tell you to stop doing what you are doing and/or totally change how you are doing it. Classic case of right hands not talking to each other and the left being out in the field stratching their heads.

Advice to Management

Get together and ensure procedures are streamlined and consistent in how their are to be performed. Instruct as a whole and then follow up to see if anyone has any questions on a one to one basis. A lot of times a handful of people are too embarassed to speak up if they don't understand how to do things and then they go blindly into the fray and mess things up that I have to discover and fix. This reduces productivity.

    Pros

Working for an leading company in the Cast and Blast sector of the outdoor industry. Great discounts, especially with more years of service. Casual dress code. Some departments have a great work environment.

    Cons

Change is not easily embraced by all people/departments. "Silo" effect is omnipresent in regard to interdepartmental communication. Some departments have highly disfunctional management. Higher than average rate of nepotism. "Dead Sea" effect and/or severe lack of work/life balance seems to happen in many fields. High gender inequality.

    Advice to Management

Managers should ask for input and follow the advice from the people on the front lines (they are the experts in their field, after all) before making a major decision instead of just informing them when it's been done and making them step up to fix the issues it creates.

Not a pleasant place to come to work except for the people I work with and the customers.

    Pros

The other Outfitters are about the only thing that keeps me coming to work.
    Some of the customers
    The discount is okay

    Cons

TOTAL lack of communication from top to bottom.
"Leaders" that are incapable of leading a parade much less a business.
Most of the managers came from Walmart,Best Buy,Lowes and Home Depot. Cabela's is supposed to be more of an experience that going to pick up a toilet gasket or a gallon of paint. It appears that making bonus by keeping labor costs low is the primary goal of the Allen mangement team.

    Advice to Management

Pull your heads out. Lead, Follow or get out of the way. If we are really the "Worlds Formost Outfitter" then staff the store like you really believe that and not like a big box store where customers have to track down an Outfitter. I might suggest that managers and GMs either come from Cabela's or work at Cabela's for 18 months before letting them loose on the Outfitters. The "team" at Allen is driving customers away with poor staffing levels and that is a shame. It takes more than a new building to run a store, It takes people that know what they are talking about to TAKE CARE OF OUR CUSTOMERS.
