A nice place to work but no vision at the top

I have been working at Calfee, Halter & Griswold full-time (more than 8 years)

Pros

It is very collegial, and not a place where FaceTime is important. People have lives outside the office and it is not a high pressure atmosphere.

Cons

Salaries have been flat, headcount is shrinking, and there does not seem to be any plan to reverse the decline. The firm seems to lack any vision, while competitors have grown, added offices and seem to be "on the move."

I worked at Calfee, Halter & Griswold full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Opportunities to work independently and some very good attorneys that are great to work with. Nice mix of clients that lets you work on a variety of subject matter.

    Cons

The pay and bonus are sub-par to be kind. No benefit to billing over the minimum required because raises were paltry even for the highest performers and the top of the bonus scale was ridiculously low also. Some of the practice group leaders couldn't lead a Girl Scout troop.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward your high performers so that they don't all leave.

Long-term focus is unclear and possibly misguided

I worked at Calfee, Halter & Griswold

    Pros

Great building, smart offices, great support staff and many good lawyers.

    Cons

Incompetent office admin and a few lawyers with rotten attitudes kill moral and any possibility for teamwork.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire a team of office admininstrators who understand the value of Human Resources...a team that will work with managing partner to encourage firm-wide communication to define a sharper focus on the future and create a better working environment for everyone, which leads to a better, more consistent product for clients.
