California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation – “Political Nightmare”

Pros

State benifits for healthcare and retirement, normal hours, time off, state holidays. Get to work with some great contracted resources.

Cons

No training, incompetent managers, very very political enviornment.

Horrible hiring and promotion process. Instead of going though the state process of evaluating someone who is on probation, it is ignored and employees who have no business being the the positions that they are in, stay.

Lots of wasteful spending.

Its who you know in this department not what you know.

Smart staff get pushed aside for staff who are "yes" men or robots, because management does not want to "know" of potential issues or problems.

Advice to Senior Management

Reach out to your staff and listen to their recommendations because at the end of the day their work can make you or break you. Take advantage of your smart staff.
