I have been working at California Franchise Tax Board

Pros

The hours are very flexible and one is able to work from home after a year. The paid time off per year is rather generous (at least 13 days a year). Overtime is unheard of; generally everyone works 40 hours a week. Since one has a good degree of autonomy and control of one's work schedule, this is the perfect job for mothers with young children.

Cons

The pay is comparable to that of a public accountant in the first three years. After that, promotions and big raises are hard to come by. In fact, it is not unusual for an auditor to be stuck as an Associate Tax Auditor (equivalent of a Senior Associate in an accounting firm) for many years before obtaining a promotion to Program Specialist I or Administrator I (Manager-level).

Advice to ManagementAdvice

There should be greater transparency in how the promotions are granted. Currently, it appears that well-connected supervisors are able to dole out promotions to their favorites regardless of an individual's ability or job performance.

I have been working at California Franchise Tax Board full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Work hours are generally flexible with option to telecommute. The paid is not too bad once you are in the associate tax auditor level. stable employment. Opportunities to work on many tax issues. As auditor you have great deal of autonomy on how to handle the work, as long as you follow the established guidelines.

    Cons

Little to no job satisfaction. Managers are too distanced and do not try to motivate staff to promote job satisfaction or provide encouragement, as a result the working environment is very dead and boring. With constant threat of pay cut and pension reform due to state government ongoing budget crisis, the turnover rate is fairly high.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Given the already below average compensation, managers should focus on employee job satisfaction to get them to become more excited and feel appreciated about their jobs. It will help reduce the employee turnover rate and "brain drain".
