I worked at California Pizza Kitchen

Pros

For the most part all the servers are really friendly and helpful. A team work environment is promoted, but not always followed. As long as you follow the "sequence of service" and are attentive to your "guests" you should do well. The guests are the best part, getting to interact with complete strangers was always an interesting experience. The wait staff for the most part are a great bunch too, as well as the back of the house (cooking staff).

Cons

If you have poor management, forget about any type of consistency in your work schedule or ability to actually give quality service to your guests. Because of poor scheduling and managements' inability to assess demand from week to week, be prepared to be "cut" too early on a lunch shift, or on the flip-side being understaffed with the cooks during lunch or dinner. Turnover here is very high in the servers, the cook staff, and even management when i was working. Don't expect the managers to honor schedule changes or days you request off even months in advance. You are viewed as a sales person and are "encouraged" through weekly reports of your performance to sell people food. The reports are garbage and are simply dependent on the sections you serve and the days/nights and shifts you work, every server would know that. Also, you tip out the bar, busser, and food-runner (if there is one). These tip-outs are based on a percentage of your sales, and non-negotiable. I think combined it was approximately 5% or so, which if you're making 20% on average per table (pretty high), you're only walking away with 15%, do the math.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you haven't fired the general manager at this store you need to. Management and leadership at this store were not synonymous and this needs to be understood. It has been demonstrated that there are many qualified and capable managers who are respectful, kind, helpful, and effective communicators - too bad they were temporary from the other CPK stores. Try getting feedback from your staff and communicating effectively about problems and potential solutions and there would be less issues.

I have been working at California Pizza Kitchen

    Pros

Benefits, friendly management, corporate structure makes it very organized and easy to do job because there is a team behind it, making sure there is quality in everything. I have worked for individually owned restaurants and while there is more freedom, I don't feel the same support as I do working for a large company like CPK>

    Cons

When business is slow, it's hard to make money. But CPK is a relatively sought-after chain that people know, so there is a guarantee that people will come.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sometimes the best way to see how servers are doing is to talk with the guests, rather than just look at what's on paper..
