I have been working at Calix full-time for more than 7 years

Pros – Excellent engineering staff. Extremely smart and gifted employees. Friendly atmosphere. People are respectful of each other. People are encouraged to take hallway conversations to one of the many breakout rooms, so the Petaluma office is fairly quiet. Calix is appropriately customer-focused. It's nice to work for a company that wants to have happy customers.

Cons – No bonuses for engineers (that I know of!). Culture is extremely schedule-driven, sometimes to the detriment of the products.

Advice to Senior Management – Overall, you're doing a great job. I would encourage management to take more of a long view for product development. Getting a software release out the door as fast as possible conflicts with the goal of writing code that can be reused and easily maintained. C7 code is to the point where it's almost unmanageable, and no one person could hope to understand it. Progress on C7 software is going to s-l-o-w-l-y grind to a halt. It's too late for C7, but don't make that mistake with newer products. Think long-term.
