Good games, poor processes

I worked at Capcom Vancouver full-time

Pros

Rare opportunity to work on games that are actually fun and look good on your resume. Good creative potential, lots of smart and passionate people. Due diligence helps ship titles against all odds (see below). Very casual. Fun events, cheap beer.

Cons

Very poor code quality, management doesn't realize or care. If you're a coder, you can't excel through the quality of your code. Bugs, OMMs, crashes. If you're a young coder, don't go here - you'll pick up bad practices. Very poor pipelines, broken builds all the time, artists and designers suffer. Toxic politics. Propaganda that forces everybody to be in denial about the issues and not speak their minds publicly. Multiple layers of PMs most of whom aren't professionals in either code or art and therefore use cheer leading, drawing graphs and guilt trips instead of reason to motivate and manage. In fact, outrageous ratio of PMs to people who actually do the job. Overtime, though not as bad as in some other places. Didn't fulfill promises of bonuses and vacations to compensate for the OT. Pay is below average. Location is not actually in Vancouver.

Advice to Management

Work smarter, not harder.

I worked at Capcom Vancouver full-time

    Pros

Great people, and a very welcoming atmosphere Lots of activities and clubs to join within the company

    Cons

There is a complete disconnect between management and the teams Recent growth happened too rapidly and employees became disgruntled Milestones aren't met and blame is passed around/passed down

    Advice to Management

Talk openly and honestly with your teams rather than hosting quarterly meetings to discuss new opportunities that will never be heard of again

I have been working at Capcom Vancouver full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

It has proven to be a fun and positive environment to work in. Lots of perks and company events and great benefits.

    Cons

Key to success very much seems to be who you know and not what you do for the company. Your reputation among upper management is the single most important element in career growth.
