I have been working at Capella Hotels and Resorts

Pros

Capella Hotels & Resorts provides tremendous insight into the old-world values of Ritz Carlton. The service culture and company mission statement are largely borrowed from the Ritz Carlton company's heyday before the Marriott takeover. The company supports front-line employees on the operations side and empowers them to serve with competitive (keep out the union!) wages and a "customer-comes-first" culture.

Cons

Upper management displays a strange mixture of naivete and arrogance. Sub-par salesperson compensation and micro-management due to inflated expectations = low sales performance and high turnover.

On the sales and marketing side, the company doesn't seem to understand how to build a brand in today's saturated marketplace. Management approaches sales as "service", with the attitude that a place within their ranks should Trump (no reference intended to the highly successful competing hotel brand) any need for competitive wages or a sense of dignity in one's work.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a realistic look at the New York marketplace. Invest in systems, strategies and people to reach your lofty revenue goals. A loose connection to the Ritz Carlton brand is not enough to support rates that compete with the quintessential luxury brand that is Ritz Carton.

    I worked at Capella Hotels and Resorts full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    -Colleagues/co-workers, they really all do become close friends
    -The company, for line level and mid-level positions hires the most amazing people
    -Empowerment of individual employees
    -Generally a place you enjoy going to everyday
    -The environment can be a lot of fun
    -The company's philosophy and core beliefs are excellent
    -The company truly wants to be the best

    Cons

    -Corporate management is very distant and uninvolved
    -There are too many philosophers, not enough doers
    -Although the company seems to be boiling over with highly talented individuals, some of the appointments by corporate for senior level positions are questionable at best
    -Corporate holds on to some poor performers and places them in usually high level positions around the company, left unsupervised which at best doesn't help advance the properties at worst can be damaging

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    -Ensure those you place in high level positions are living up to your excellent philosophy
    -Followup with your properties, when you come to visit a hotel, look around, pretend you're a guest, checkout the spa, the pool, try all the services and do it at odd hours, unannounced when top level management isn't tracking your movements
    -Ask random, line level staff to walk you through their job, ask them to observe at random intervals, get involved
    -Don't just ask about the philosophy, ask random staff, specifically, when was the last time they used it as a guide, when was the last time they actually used empowerment
    -Ask to see incident logs
    -Don't ask the same people the same questions, ask different people
    -Ask to see overtime sheets
    -Don't always stay in the same hotel units
    -Arrive anonymously sometimes
    -Ask random guests checking out about thier stays

    Pros

    Senior management have excellent honour and integrity. The Cannon is energized in everybody's activities and is very relevant to today's hotel industry.

    Cons

    The company is small and needs to grow to provide more career opportunities for its employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Re-hire star performers, that have departed due to lack of opportunities, (as the firm is still small), as the firm grows as a priority.
