Former Employee - Course Development Project Manager in Minneapolis, MN

I worked at Capella University full-time (more than a year)

Pros

Flexibility in work environment with work from home perks, flex hours. Caring attitude towards staff with a balance on results. My boss genuinely cared about the outcome of the work and the impact to learners. Over all, nice people, collaborative environment, pleasant environment.

Cons

Capella's management does not have a firm grasp on how to hold people accountable. This negatively impacted the higher performers morale and lead to mediocrity. Higher performers are discouraged and tend to look else where after a period of time. Left the position because there was not a career path, dead end position.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Readjust context and structure for high performers, this would benefit the bottom line. Focus on relationship and results. Keep the collaborative and people friendly, friendly environment.

I worked at Capella University full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Job had clear expectations of roles and responsibilities, good training, decent salary. Department attempted to keep job fun during busy times with games, food, etc.

    Cons

Things changed too often and implementation of changes were not well thought out. Role of advising transitioned from being an advisor to working in call center. Students did not take their education seriously and looked for handouts, made unrealistic demands or felt entitled.

I have been working at Capella University full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Friendly people, Many people will go out of their way to help or find answers or solutions. Managers support flexible schedules for work life balance. Free degree programs to further career. Things are always changing.

    Cons

Often hard work from onsite staff goes unnoticed. Culture is changing and old values and beliefs are not valued as highly. Seems old solutions to new problems are being recycled every 3 years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take time and effort to understand talent across the organization. There are a multitude of people that just want to help people achieve their dream. It seems that as of late all of the emphasis has been on the Learners not the people that encourage and mentor them. Make sure that communication is deciphered to all include all employees not just management.
