I have been working at Capital One

Pros

Extremely intelligent, driven people
Ability to move around from job to job - which can be unrelated to previous experience (moves are based on skill level, but there's a downside because people can take highly specialized positions without prior experience)
In some areas of the company - great flexibility with work schedule, hours, location - 'future of work' modality

Cons

Salaries and benefits decreased over time to accommodate becoming a bank vs. credit card company,
Performance management process is cumbersome
Success depends on manager who will fight for you
Inconsistencies in 'flexible work' environment - vary from department to department and individual to individual
Some legacy employees who joined Capital One when very young are still young and in very (too) senior positions

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Gain better consistency of flexible work environment throughout the organization
Stop compromising the level of health benefits provided to employees

I have been working at Capital One

    Pros

Smart, motivated coworkers and lots of recognition/praise for a job well done. Intelligent and smart leadership, generally making good decisions. Great benefits (vacation, flex time, work from home - sometimes). Great facilities. Interesting work. Great training classes.

    Cons

Too much work - many at the Manager + level work 55-65 hours a week. They say they support working from home, but typically only on Fridays. Too many meetings where phone calls/emails/IM could suffice. Too many meetings mean not enough time for work. Performance management process intense and cumbersome; too complex. Expect that once you get in, you'll be at that level for 3-5 years - hard to get promoted. Not as many options for promotion/advancement as you think unless you are Sr Mgr+ and are willing to leave your line of business.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Really stand behind your support of flexible hours/working from home. With commute times sky high and gas prices rising, let associates work from home. Face time not always necessary; meetings via phone, videoconference can suffice.

    I worked at Capital One

    Pros

Environment was supportive, fun, and encouraging. Training was ongoing and the leadership team was fabulous. You could share your opinions and there were frequent feedback sessions to determine what was going well and what wasn't.

    Cons

Schedules were not traditional and required working rotations on weekends and nights.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The leadership team did everything right. I would work for them again in a heartbeat.
