Former Employee - Principal Associate in Richmond, VA

I worked at Capital One full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

People are great, salary & benefits good. Telecommute/flex time a big plus. Great campus, lots of freedom.

Cons

Performance Management is a disgrace. Promotions based on popularity and how good your manager is at presenting you in discussions. Decisions already made in advance of "360 feedback".

Very political. Pretty young college girls do well and move up, but veterans suffer. Lots of cliques.I did upper-level work for 3 years and never got the offical promotion (or pay).

Much talk about "open culture" and diversity of thought -- but be vocally opposed to something and you're banished from the kingdom.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't play with your people. Get rid of the politics. You have so many talented, smart people there -- stop screwing with them. Oh, and watchdog your ethics too.

I have been working at Capital One full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Opportunities to network across financial services divisions, positive environment for collaboration, focus is on hiring top talent, and a wide array of special events to spotlight the employee.

    Cons

Focus is on too many projects. Each division has their goals to achieve, which requires cross functional teams. The result is managers are mired in too many meetings and the time it takes to complete is lengthy. Most projects take 8 to 12 months to complete because of all the levels to approve and committees that need to review. The focus is on top talent, but there are some employees that have come on board from acquisitions and have their heels dug in on how processes should be even though they are outdated compared to the marketplace. The recognition program is focused mainly on front line staff, leaving out the mid level managers
who feel sandwiched between some employees who feel entitled to be recognized and their manager who continue to push down on mid level managers for recognizing staff without giving them recognition.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't be afraid to get in the weeds and understand the process flows, which benefits overall appreciation at every level.
