I have been working at Capital One

Pros

Capital One has excellent employees overall. Talented and good to work with. Management has done a good job of keeping the company afloat during hard times.

Cons

Career advancement has been minimal past two years, and the process seems objective, but too much subjectivity and top down influence comes into play behind the scenes.

New hires are given higher positons and pay than current employees who are held to a higher standard.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Examine current employees and reward those you want to retain, or there will be continued problems with turnover.

    Pros

The people are very smart and very open, which provides a great consensus building environment. This is great for broadening your own knowledge and developing your skills.

    Cons

The big reason to work at somewhere like Capital One is work life balance. Take the lower salary and avoid all the pain Wall St hours. It's not like that at Capital One. They work you to exhaustion and undercompensate you. That might work OK if they looked after their staff, but they tend to treat you like a possession and pay no mind to your own career preferences.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look after your staff and look for ways to give them job security. You are not a Wall St bank, you don't pay Wall St salaries so you shouldn't view your workers as being such a disposable asset. Also think long and hard before you buy your next bank - they've hardly been value added acquisitions to date.

    I worked at Capital One

    Pros

Good work-life balance for most employees
Very solid compensation & benefits package
    Talented employees
    Generally positive work environment
    Excellent leadership engagement

    Cons

Must consistently under-promise and over-deliver to be recognized
Success requires a strong network, so those with more seniority have an advantage
Managers do not deliver timely & constructive performance feedback
    Relatively frequent reorganizations & layoffs
    "Program of the month" mentality

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Require management training in performance feedback. Clarify responsibility & accountability at all levels. Take a longer term view of both employee development and business strategy.
