Pros

Flexible Work Schedule
Time Off
Decent Benefits
Decent Salary
Research & Marketing departments are pretty solid
Ok Office locations
Smart staff

Cons

No process in place for ANYTHING
No Diversity
Senior Management does a poor job in communicating EVERYTHING
Sales Management Lacks Focus
No Recognition for a job well-done
Marketing Dept. would be much stronger if they had a better leader

Advice to Management

Senior Management needs to have some sense of responsibility and accountability. Captivate has the shiny toy syndrome. They jump from one project to the next and never really focus on seeing anything through. The irony is that this should be a cutting edge digital company but internally the software is outdated and all the processes are manual. Management needs to invest in trying to get the company up to speed. Right now Captivate is about 10 years behind.

    Pros

If you need some experience in a digital media company this will get you some. If you need to show you have accomplished something at a digital media company then there are better choices.

If you want to play it safe, this might be a good place to start. If you want to be involved in innovation look elsewhere.

    Cons

The only people that stay at this company have offices with windows - they have two goals - make corporate happy and get to retirement.

Employees are a commodity here. Turnover is incredibly high. There is no oportunity for internal advancement. One look at the sales and marketing turnover on LinkedIn will tell you that they have trouble retaining talented people with strong backgrounds. Look at where past employees have come from, where they have gone and how long they have stayed at Captivate.

Captivate puts on a good show from the outside but they do not walk the talk. There is no internal culture here, don't expect to make life long friends.

Senior management likes to play hide the ball as if they have some secret project that is going to turn things around internally. They don't. Projects get announced and never get finished. Improvements are talked about but since this company cannot keep anyone around long enough, nothing changes.

VP of marketing is neither inspiring or visionary. This company is mired down in politics and inaction. The marketing department misses one opportunity after another to create a cohesive team. The lack of organization and improvement and the company politics hurt morale. Departments heads can't seem to agree on anything so its no wonder employees in different departments don't work well together.

    Advice to Management

The website for this company needs to be completely revamped before they move forward. It lacks sophistication, an intutitive feel and is out of sync with the image that the actual product conveys. It is laughable and embarrassing. Anyone visiting this website would never be able to tell this company leads the digital out of home industry.

Time to clean house and put in place a strategic senior management team who has proven experience, the ability to lead change and supports its employees. The company has potential to emerge as a leader in the digital media space supported by Gannett but not without innovation in product development, sales and marketing.

The company needs to build some flexibility into the work environment for everyone to show they actually value individuals and do understand the work/life balance. If the market were better this company would have a mass mutiny when that happens its failure to cross training employees and help the professionally develop will result in a huge gap that will have an immediate impact on performance.

This company needs to provide professional advancement opportunities and real training for employees so the revolving door stops. Time to take a look at what the leading companies are doing to encourage employee innovation, growth and retention.
