Disappointed, wishing for more opportunity to earn more $$$. Starting Salary to low for entry level management.

Pros

Atmosphere is friendly, and fun!

Cons

Hours are long for the level of pay, both for entry level management, and entry level sales.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you want to attract the best quality for entry level management, you need to have the starting pay level a little higher. You can't survive off $40,000 a year, and you won't attract the best talent with management experience at that low pay level to start. Great place to work if you can survive the startup pay.

    I worked at CarMax

    Pros

    flex time in some departments
    great benefits
    positive company culture
    opportunities for advancement
    ongoing training opportunities
    company supportive of work/life balance
    competitive pay
    opportunities for bonuses
    matching gifts program
    regular associate appreciation events

    Cons

some difficulty advancing if you aren't personally well-connected to upper management/advancement does not always seem to be based on merit
micro-managing of associates can be common (dependent on your department)
employees in good standing are told that they can come back if they leave but actually cannot do so; long time service does not seem to be valued as highly as it once was

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure that you are not losing touch with your employees (their work responsibilities, daily life). Be sure to promote based on merit and not based on personal relationships. Improve the human resources department so that new hires are competent and meet the needs of the department. Treat adults like adults rather than children (no micromanaging when unnecesary).
