Tiresome and rigid management procedures, but if you can get over that, it's not bad

I have been working at CarMax full-time (more than 8 years)

Pros

Work, life balance. Flexible vacation policy, nice home office building

Cons

Culture that needs new programs to validate people are continually improving. Revolving door of new programs and training takes the eye off more important conversations that teams need to be focused on, like selling more cars.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop shoveling training down our throats and forcing crazy procedures for future promotions.

I worked at CarMax full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Company has excellent training. Company is friendly to family needs of employees. National so you can work almost anywhere. Company has fair benefits.

    Cons

Company does not care about having competitive wages in comparison with the industry. Company does not appreciate it's employees up to and including it's top performers. They subscribe to the "your a dime a dozen" mentality. Company has lazy managers. Managers would rather sit behind a desk doing nothing instead of stepping out to help close a sale. Company micro manages employees to the point that they leave the company. Company gave 1 pay increase to sales consultants that I know of during many years of employment. Managers participate in favoritism with employees to the point that if you are not liked regardless of performance you will be "managed" out of the company. Managers including LGM's can be very incompetent with little or no experience in sales or other areas of the company. I would not recommend this company for employment except as a stepping stone to a real job where you get paid for what you are worth! This company overloads the sales floors to the point that only a select few sales consultants make a half way decent living. This companies sales floor is a revolving door hiring as many as 10 sales consultants at a time only to see at least that many leave within a few months once they see they cannot make enough money to survive with so many fighting for the limited numbers of traffic coming in to the stores. Don't expect to advance in this company at all PERIOD if you are not in the managers little "circle" regardless if you are a top performer or have management experience!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Appreciation of your hard working dedicated employees. Be more hands on in sales helping your sales consultants succeed instead of draining them with constant training behind the scenes. Upper management is more concerned about Fortune 500 status and being in the Fortune Top 100 than the compensation satisfaction of their employees. Oh hey how about advertising, which is almost nothing compared to competitors. You pay ALL of your employees cost of living increases and huge salary increases to upper management yet you tell sales consultants that if they want a pay increase to sell another car and you do this quite rudely to boot! You show you care nothing about your sales staff when it comes to them making a living. WAKE UP! Your sales staff is the core of your business and your company is the only company I have ever worked for that treat their sales staff like garbage!
