I worked at CarMax full-time (less than a year)

Pros

Worked with good people and met many people*customers). The training was detailed and focused on you. The benefits were good and priced fairly

Cons

I felt like I was always being watched by the managers and felt like they took the wrong approach to educating employees. They would talk down to you and look for the smallest things to correct instead of showing you how to better your sales process.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lay off of the micro management and allow sales people to sell. Not each person is the same when it comes to selling. Leadership needs to learn how to lead instead of worrying about reports.

I worked at CarMax full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, lots of advancement opportunities, discount on vehicles and service, constant training, can transfer nationwide if needed, company really gives back to charity and communities, decent tuition reimbursement program, good if you're a people person

    Cons

Retail hours, most states have stores that are open seven days a week, required uniforms, pay is not comparable to similar jobs, required to work with customers which is atypical for many office jobs

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Worked in the business office for 4 years. Part of that is learning license and title work, but a lot is customer service skills. After 4 years, was paid just under $12.00 per hour after starting at $10.00. Was required to be available to work shifts starting at 7:15 am and ending at 11:00 pm. (This has changed since 2010.) Needed a set schedule to be able to go back to college, but managers were inflexible with full time employee scheduling. Found full time work with a weekly set schedule as a license and title clerk at a new car dealer making $13.00, which is considered low for the industry. Customer service demands a higher wage, and license and title work, which is a skilled labor, also demands higher pay.
