I have been working at Cardiff University

Pros

Great job flexibility and training are the strongest points. You can leave at pretty much any time and stay as long as you want provided the job is done, although this may depend a lot on your supervisor. You have also strong trainign opportunities with many courses running and there is a Lifelong Learning Centre related to the university for more serious stuff.

Cons

The promotions of internal staff are not really promoted and some people is not really helpful. The IT service is particularly bad. the network can be down any time and you receive loads of spam. States also takes ages to sort anything out, so youd better have some basic tools at hand.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please, give them a course to develop some basics of people management.

I have been working at Cardiff University

    Pros

By far the best thing of working at Cardiff University is the Work/Life balance. In my job I have utter felxibility and self-responsability is assumed since the first day, which is a good thing if you have it. The university is also placing a good amount of effort to attract the best candidates offering astonishing annual leaves and salaries conmensurate with the top British Universities, even thoug Cardiff is still a cheap place to live in. I would also like to highlight the commitment the make to career development and the sucess of several groups in competing for funds.

    Cons

Isolation, horrid IT service. Services scattered thougout the city.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Dont be afraid to be innovative. It pays in the long term.

I worked at Cardiff University part-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Demanding but reasonable management; good pay and conditions (especially holiday entitlement). Excellent colleagues and academic staff. Good training and development opportunities.

    Cons

Can be bureaucratic, slow to make decisions and implement changes. Focus on academic endeavours means that support staff can be overlooked/underrepresented. Budgets being tightened - therefore more pressure on staff than previously.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management training should be compulsory and regularly updated for all staff managing teams.
