Former Employee - Nurse in Ponteland, England (UK)

I worked at Care UK full-time (more than an year)

Pros

Pro-active in staff training for HCAs and to a degree for qualified staff. Qualified pay is reasonable.
Better overall than many of its competitors.

Cons

Qualified staff have to wear pink, which for most male nurses is not really appropriate.
Very poor at responding to complaints of harassment/bullying by Home Managers towards staff.

I have been working at Care UK part-time

    Pros

My manager of two years has been one of the best I've worked with. He has been supportive and accomodated new ideas. Most importantly he made staff feel important. I may have been lucky to have a great manager who has influenced me but I generallylike the management.

    Cons

Some organisational practices can improve, although the company has started to improve practices. Recently, a few strict rules and procedures have been put in place that have made for some less convinientprocedures. However, nothig too alarming.

I have been working at Care UK part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible hours, training taken very seriously, pay rate is good

    Cons

Don't always feel supported by management

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Staffing levels: service users are not just numbers. If a unit has 3 empty beds please don't just veto the use of agency staff to bring the numbers up to quota; the needs of the service users MUST be part of the equations e.g. high dependency, challenging behaviour, need for 15 minute observation etc.
