Good people, good products, still trying to find their spun-off sea legs

Pros

In a word, the people. It never ceases to amaze me how many great people work at this company. People who want to see CFN succeed. People who want to see the companys' products benefit the market. People who will go out of their way to make your issue their issue.

Cons

The People are overworked and underpaid. It is the never changing saga and plight of the individual human resource belonging to the publically traded entity who owes nothing to anyone except the stockholder.

Depending on the department, the pay is not in keeping with the market; we have lost many good people to greener grass.

Sometimes it feels as though promotion of work-life balance is lip service.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow for the voice of the employee to reach the executive level in forums other than generic Voice of Employee surveys, where the questions are so vague the responses can interpreted 180 degrees from the respondants' intent.

When saving money in the second half of the fiscal year, be consistent with the level of savings measures in all departments...restricting a $50 spend on lunch for a mgr and their team doesn't seem in line with a accidental email to all employees informing of a sales spiff all expenses paid vacation to Costa Rica for the top few sales reps and their families.

Take a hard look at your hierarchy. Find a way to assess your low-mid mgmt. Ask your employees...All managers should be required to submit a 180-degree review that is is then sent/viewed by that persons' manager.

When cutting, impacting the line level headcount forces efficiency, but only to a point. Some depts at CareFusion are well beyond that point. Further cuts to those actually doing the work (ie non-management) are counterproductive in both the short and longterm.

I have been working at CareFusion full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

People are mostly nice and professional. The PTO policy is good if you've been with the company a while. (only reason I'm presently still at CF)

    Cons

It looks to me like too many critically influential positions in upper management are filled by people who got the job because they knew the right person in Cardinal Health at the time the company split off. There just seem to be a lot of VPs, presidents, and directors in positions they aren't really qualified for and they're making a major mess of things. They don't seem to be willing to learn what they need in order to become effective. (It almost seems like they think it's beneath them to really learn how the business works) What's worse, the management structure as a whole acts like a parasite sitting on top of the organization sucking away all the profits that might otherwise go into invigorating the business and doing some R&D.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Abandon the ineffective manage-by-numbers approach. This approach may work when managing sales people (this is where it comes from), but it is a recipe for disaster in anything that involves the more complex activities and skills like product development. It is also creating one of the most unhappy work places I have ever witnessed. Get to know your business and become focused on nurturing and growing it rather than sucking it dry and driving away all your best employees.

I worked at CareFusion full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

A paycheck, albeit not competitive with similar positions. My direct peers. Having restrooms.

    Cons

There was not a day of PTO (paid time off) that I did not have to be available for a con call or conversation w/Senior Management. Total lack of innovation....just taking the same old products and reconfiguring them. Average engineers. Total lack of leadership from the very top. Yes, share price has increased but only due to cutting people (operating expense), divestitures, and more revenue from acquisitions. Frankly, that doesn't take a lot of talent. Prima donnas scurrying about on mahogany row....silly for a company this size. And a total lack of respect for the hard work done by employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

How can Kieran have a 44% rating with such a big number of unhappy employee?. The "C" suite could care less about its employees. They chew them up and spit them out all for the sake of "making the numbers", hence continual lay-offs and cutting back of benefits. How can you have so many recalls and still have the same senior Quality management people in charge? They couldn't stick to an AOP (annual operating plan) if their lives depended on it...hence, continual course corrections (sometimes weekly) and jerking employees, customers, and suppliers around.
