Pros

There aren't many, the benefits were better than average, the tuition plan was ok but very late in happening. It became obvious that management was the problem and that the company could not survive it's own dysfunction.
As a result, there's lots of turnover of managment and at all levels frankly, which dooms a company to repeat the same mistakes over and over. People were promoted based on a good old boys system and not based on qualifications, past results, or credentials. In fact lots of managers have no credentials that relate to their position. There was a lot of lip service to ethics, and principals but in practice blatent disregard for what would be best for the company and their customers.

Cons

People were treated with such disrespect, no regard for private/family life, no communication, management very incompetent and never listened to employees even when they got very good and genuine feedback. After working here you'll appreciate working at a real company.
Very fast growth put unqualified people in positions of authority who didn't hold their charges accountable for their performance.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

You can't, they won't listen, they think they know it all, when in fact they don't know jack about anything. All the management staff I met had never really run a college or worked in legimate education before, and had not actually been successful at managing a for-profit company either. Many had a military career, which is NOT a qualification to run a company or a college. And when you treat your employees like military personnel and expect them to jump when you bark orders... that just does not fly in business today.

    Pros

    The compensation & benefits may be slightly better than other companies. Someone with little experience, a lot of ambition, and thick skin could do very well at Career Education (CEC)

    Cons

    There is consistently high turnover. New managers were not given an opportunity to see their ideas and projects through before being shown the door. Therefore as new senior managers were hired, everyone had to endure the same mistakes over and over again. Employee morale was extremely low.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Executive turnover has to be reduced significantly. CEC could do wonders with employee morale by increasing communication across divisions.

    I worked at Career Education full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Big company, owns school in culinary, art and design, online colleges, healthcare and int'l.

    Cons

    They lost over 10 mil this year, over 900 layoffs in Dec 2012 and over 1000 a year or two ago. They've downsized to the point that I can't see how many roles left could be cut and still operate. They just closed 23 campuses nationally and I'm pretty sure will see that many more close in the next 24 months or so. I think they will start to shift to mostly online schools and let leases expires at on ground schools and do teach outs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Supporting an industry like culinary when the placement rates are so low and their expected income is the same as someone getting the job with no college degree/cert isn't the right thing to do. Dollars need to be allocated to those schools that can provide the degrees that will get the grads jobs and careers. Emphasis has been on listening to the campuses this last year but I never saw anyone listening.. Major decisions made all the time without even a campus President's buy in. Programs being changed when no one agreed, programs being pushed that no one wanted to enroll for, and competing schools both owned by CEC and near each other offering the same programs cannibalizing the business.. So many felt lucky to be let go and so many more actually hoping their campuses will close. Those people used to be major believers in the brand and what they do, CEC is to blame for that shift, not gainfull employment or Obama, but the decisions they've made and the aftermath therein.
