Former Employee - Teach Assistant (Systems Engineering) in Ottawa, ON (Canada)

Pros

Lots of variety in courses taught.
State of the art equipment.
Lots of smart people to discuss ideas with.
Eagerness to improve.

Cons

Far from downtown.
The ME building is old and needs upgrades.
The transit system doesn't operate very well. Buses are always over capacity.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

You should improve the public transit system so that it is easier to get to and from campus. Also, it would be nice if campus had designated bike lanes.

Current Employee - Anonymous Employee in Ottawa, ON (Canada)

    Pros

manager gets resources needed, then stays out of the way so that professionals can get the job done right. No micromanaging!

    Cons

not in the top league as far as research universities go, so not much depth in terms of on-site collaboration, but so what- research is now global via the Internet, so this is no longer much of a hindrance

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the good work, know when to step in to get resources for your people, and when to step out so they can get the job done.

    Current Employee - Administrative Management

    Pros

Great work life balance. Strong sense of community and pride in staff for working here. Dedication to service students is improving. Strong performers can perform. New leadership is working out well.

    Cons

Slow decision making... typical red tape... it is a public sector company / mentality after all. Like other university environments, tensions between staff and faculty members. More respect needed from faculty to staff / corporate. Some imbalances between merit and pay.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

LEAP - Listen, empathize, agree and partner! Listen to feedback and have more of a private sector mentality.
