Pros

Working with troubled children can be very rewarding when interventions are effective. The employees have a good sense of humor. The work is never boring. The activities staff are required to participate in with the children are diverse, fun, and interesting.

Cons

The hours are long and overtime follows a nonstandard structure--only work over 40 hours a week is considered overtime, and 12 or 16 hour days are compensated without overtime. Breaks are rare. The youth/clients can be aggressive and very disrespectful. Communication between shifts can be inconsistent.

Advice to Management

Ensure that floor staff are compensated more fairly; they are the backbone of the organization and in order to keep them happy, standard overtime structures and break schedules should be adhered to.

    Pros

-Rewarding experience and a chance to change lives.
-Lackluster pay is made up for by great benefits!
-Supervisors and management team are on your side. They will go up to bat for you if you are honest, and are understanding about mistakes or shortcomings.
-Plenty of people in every department have been with Casa Pacifica for a long time. These people all started in direct care, and if they're willing to stay for 10+ years, you know that management is doing something right.

    Cons

It's the mental health field, so don't expect to get rich by working here. Staff turn-over is higher on campus as opposed to community services as well, so keep that in mind.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the wonderful work, and look into ways to invest even more in you employees hoping to make their career at Casa Pacifica!

    Pros

Working with children and seeing all the programs available to families/children in crisis is wonderful. It is definitely a rewarding job in that the time and energy you devote to these kids is genuinely needed and appreciated. It is also really fun working with the kids, a lot of the job is play and going on off campus "outings" with the kids. So work some days consist of an afternoon at the beach and then ice cream before heading back to campus.

    Cons

Lunch breaks are taken on the job so there's no time to really relax or unwind and enjoy a meal in peace. You must stay on campus for your lunch and are occasionally given one 10 minute break during a shift. This becomes stressful when shifts can last anywhere between 8-10hrs.

    Advice to Management

I think there should be more general support for on the floor staff who spend the majority of the time with the children. It can be a very high stress job, and without some extra support can lead to burnout which might explain the high employee turnover. Offer coffee, snacks, 10-15min breaks, and maybe work on making the break rooms a little more relaxing. I think office staff take for granted the stressfulness of the job for floor staff and don't offer enough support.
