I worked at Casual Male Retail Group

Pros

You work with many people on projects and get to know everyone. The staff is friendly and really has a "casual" atmosphere. Most of upper management doesn't have an attitude. There is often room for movement. The pay is good and competitive.

Cons

Bad benefits. Little recognition of work ethic. Management doesn't care about employees' livelihood. I've seen people work there 10 years and be fired without as much as a blink. The bottom line is Casual Male only cares about their bottom line. Once you're in, forget about bonuses, raises, or benefits. You have a decent job, but will be fed up with the pressure, politics, and deadlines in a few years.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize the employees who work under you. Reward them as needed and deserved. Apply more forward thinking to help the company grow.

Current Employee - Store Manager in New York, NY

I have been working at Casual Male Retail Group

    Pros

They are a big organization and after you manage this type of store, you can gain enough experience to manage a similar volume/type of store.

    Cons

They want you to be within the top 300 or so stores. If you are not, your job is in jeopardy. The logical thing is, there is 450 stores so each week somebody will be number one and somebody will be last, you can't tie with another store so therefore these rankings are unfair. They will have you sign a document saying if you don't improve your ranking that further action can be taken including and up to termination.

They have begun a mystery shopping program where the mystery shoppers are literally videotaping associates. Yes, you got that right. Videotaping in our stores by mystery shoppers.

They have a tracker at the front door that tracks who walks in and how many of those people are converted to customers. Employees are counted as customers when they walk in the door and if they leave for lunch and come back. So this customer tracking system is very unfair. The company claims they compensate for employee entering and leaving but they do not and they don't provide you with any type of evidence that that happens. If you have two employees as some stores do it's not as bad but if you happen to have more employees you are simply not going to be successful.

There is a $1500 medical insurance deductible that has to be met each year before the company begins to pick up the tab. It doubles if you have a family.

If your shrink is above a certain percentage they make you count the entire store each month. That's right, each month you have to count the entire store. They don't give you any extra payroll to do it so that week you are working with a skeleton crew.

The company does not want to listen to their store manager's to help improve their stores. It is very heavily managed from the top and you feel a sense of fear if you speak out with any logic, or trying to make sense of senseless policies and expectations.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your pressure on sales is very oppressive and you do not respect people for what they're doing but rather you put unrelenting pressure on people for sales.

Videotaping associates by mystery shopping is very demeaning and hows a lack of respect and fosters a culture of not trusting.

You ask some stores to count their entire stores each month yet you give no extra payroll for that? Do you understand how much of a deficient you are putting your store on regarding payroll and trying to accomplish all tasks. With less people in the store that week, you are also causing an atmosphere where more theft occurs. Don't you understand this? You are defeating your own purpose!

Each store should be shown how many trackers are given to each store so that employees are not counted as customers. Each employee enters once. Then each people can leave for lunch and return so each employee should be counted twice for a store so they are not counted as a customer and ruin your conversion. We also leave each day for the bank so that should not be counted as against us as well. The conversion tracking system is very unfair and is undermining our efforts and is it not an accurate system. Why don't you all fix this and help us all to succeed?

I worked at Casual Male Retail Group

    Pros

Generous merchandise discounts and good field leadership. A much bigger focus on training than most retailers. Opportunities for advancement.

    Cons

Senior management engages in somewhat questionable behavior (mandatory pay cuts for field leadership and all corporate personnel while given VPs 20,000 shares each).

The company needs to change how they calculate performance. Under the new systems, it is virtually impossible to meet, let alone exceed individual performance goals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start listening to your employees. They have good ideas.
