I have been working at Caterpillar full-time (More than a year)

Pros

Good brand name. Known to be the best in the heavy equipment industry, although heavy equipment industry has not had any breakthroughs for decades.

Cons

promotions are not merit based. Accountability is just a word, not something that is followed. Even if the manager made a bad decision they are not held responsible but rather promoted! Very discouraging to see that at the workplace. Many of the managers are not willing to listen to the flaws of the company that cause the current problems but continue to ignore the problems. Depending on which part of Caterpillar you are working in, you will get more opportunities than others. The Culture fosters all of the wrong behavior and leads to more problems.

Advice to Management

Make sure you are promoting the right kind of people and keep them accountable for the decisions that they make.

I worked at Caterpillar full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Extremely strong brand in a rising market sector. Most employees really care about doing their job to the best of their ability.

    Cons

Caterpillar is bypassing qualified internal candidates for positions in the name of increasing diversity in favor of individuals with lesser qualifications. IT/IS management has good work/life balance, their subordinates don't. Management overpromises and then holds employees responsible for bad goals that they did not help set. Senior management is perceived as having had their "time in the trenches" predominantly in the accounting or finance arena, and have publicly boasted in the business press as having frozen the IT budget at 1999 levels, mostly by reducing IT headcount with "off-shored assets". Unfortunately, (having been there, done that) many of these assets are lowest-bidders with attendant abilities, that the others have to carry the weight of too.

    Advice to Management

Live the values that you preach, if Caterpillar really does hire only the top performers why do you promote from outside? Other people besides mid/upper management would like to have home lives too. Hire more help or get more realistic expectations. 6 Sigma was supposed to be adopted to solve problems by using facts; stop letting the emotions (of Division Managers and up) continue to scuttle the correct course of action.
