Current Intern - Design Engineer in Champaign, IL
Current Intern - Design Engineer in Champaign, IL

I have been working at Caterpillar as an intern (less than a year)

Pros

Excellent work environment. Everyone is really friendly and the full time employees/mentors are very helpful. Caterpillar has great training software too. It's as if you get paid to take free classes in Pro Engineer (CAD), Pro Mechanica (FEA), or whatever you may be working with. The majority of projects are fun, challenging, and overall great experience.

Cons

Depending on whether there are projects available or at some points in between projects you may have to do some maintenance work.

I have been working at Caterpillar full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Global company with all possibilities and chances. Very good sales system and present in nearly every country of the world.

    Cons

Due to the fact that Caterpillar is a global company there are a lot of rules the staff has to follow.

I have been working at Caterpillar as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

It has been a great experience so far.
    - Employees are treated with respect.
    - Stress levels are low. If your work load increases, your team lead/manager will take care of that and make sure it is divided between other team members or you get overtime.
    - If you perform well, you will be given additional responsibility and recognition. This helps you grow and you feel rewarded for your efforts
    - You are allowed to make mistakes. I have worked at other places and there if you do 100 things right and make 1 mistake, people get ready to cut your throat. But here, if you make mistakes, your supervisors understand that you are human. Of course, you cannot make mistakes all the time. But the overall philosophy is "we succeed as a group"
    - It is easier to request something from other employees/groups. If your work is dependent upon input from others, you don't have to climb a mountain to get that done.

    Cons

    - For contract employees, it is very difficult to get a direct hire position. I think you should do something about this especially for employees who have been contributing effectively for several years
    - As an addition to the previous point, as good as CAT is, the contract agencies that employ people here are greedy and exploit their employees. The result is that if a contract employee and a direct hire employee at CAT are doing the same job, the direct employee gets more pay, bonus and other incentives, has more stability and has a greater potential for growth.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Overall, I am satisfied with the management, but please do something regarding employees who have been contributing as contractor employees, especially for those who have been doing this for an extended period of time. They need more recognition and financial incentives.
