    Pros

Most of the employees are great. They are there to help people and this makes for a good work environment.

    Cons

Senior management needs more monitoring. The company could be much stronger if managers were given solid management training. Many employees are promoted to management without any previous management experience. This makes it difficult for these new managers to be effective; especially, people whose backgrounds are in social services not management. Resources are scarce and people have to do more with less. Management (especially Sr. Mgmt) seem stuck in the past with few long-term strategies that are grounded in the present needs of the clients and society. Little attention is paid to client's review of the programs which is a problem b/c the clients are often dissatisfied. I think employees have a hard time dealing with the client's dissatisfaction because of the lack of support from management. However, management also has a lack of support...so the chain extends upwards.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not promote unless you are sure the employee is ready. Train managers in proper management techniques (performance reviews; open communication; decision making). Start speaking to the clients to better understand their needs and then change the programs to fit those needs. Institute new and innovative fundraising solutions so that you can better support your programs with basic needs and then support the clients. Hire a Development Director AND Development Officers. In a market where resources are scarce, a company must be competitive and generate those donations. The organization can be great, but if it doesn't realize it is competing with other non-profits and start doing more to differentiate itself and genereate more donation dollars, other non-profits will and it will be too late. Hire talented managers and pay them better. Don't be satisfied with the status quo, require more from your employees and programs, but provide the necessary support.
