I worked at Catholic Health Initiatives full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

They do pay regular employees on time, though payment of contractors is not important to maangement. I have watched a couple contractor friends of mine fight every week to get paid on time because their manager didn't approve their timecard on time. When they went to HR they said there is nothing they can do.

Cons

They make decisions based on no fact, they do not know how to run an IT dept. They put people in management positions based on who is their friend, no experience to do the job but it is someones friend so they determine the path for many things, though they have no idea what they are talking about. They make poor decisions, they treat people very poorly, especially since they aer supposed to be a religous orginization. Overall they are a very terrible place to work, benefits are not good either, weird to work for a health care company that provides terrible healthcare for their employees.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

replace management from the CEO to the front line manager, overall CHI needs lots of work. Put someone in place that actually knows how to do their job so you don't have to hire consultants every year to determine what you should be doing. Get a backbone and take care of the company the nuns built.

A company not interested in retaining talent.

I have been working at Catholic Health Initiatives full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    Good work/life balance.

    Great people to work with.

Lower-end managers care and do their best to help employees get their jobs done.

    Reasonably good paid time off.

Fairly easy to get resources/equipment when needed.

    Cons

Far too many meetings and bureaucracy. Change management is important and must be accurate, but it should not take two weeks to a month of planning to install a server or plan a power outage.

Management unwilling to commit to decisions. Getting an answer from anyone in the chain of command takes weeks.

Upper management does not trust its employees to do their jobs, stringent work from home rules, hiring consultants constantly instead of listening to employees, trying to apply blanket rules to a diverse set of businesses.

Upper management does not understand technology and infrastructure, it's seen as a cost center rather than a productivity multiplier.

Poor salary and benefits, little chance for advancement.

Inability to budget long-term, even a short a time period as a year seems to be beyond management's ability.

Company is outsourcing jobs to India.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Outsourcing departments means you will lose your institutional expertise. If an employee does not work for your company, they will have no investment in it and give less than their all to their work. Your talented people are leaving rather than letting you treat them even more poorly than before.

    Company values are for everyone.

Learn and understand what you're managing, listen to your experts that work for you. Trust your employees, they want the company to succeed as much as you do!

    Bureaucracy is choking productivity.

    Pros

Good pay, benefit and all ways paid on time.

    Cons

Manager allow some help desk staff to get away with doing no work, they do allow them to set back and watch you tub and talk bad to other employees. The management would pick and choses who will be promoted and make not excuse it will not be a female or a blacks. The help desk management still have that good ole boy way of thinking and for that, this is why they are getting outsouring.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Higher up management need to take a good look at some of there help desk management, because some of them will go to a diff dept after the outsourcing and take some of those good ole boys value with them.
