I have been working at Catholic University

    Pros

Great medium size organization -- very possible to make a difference for our students. Great support from colleagues and managers. Quite fiscally sound, during latest recession there were no jobs losses or furloughs in fact, we got raises.

    Cons

It is lacking in gender and racial diversity among students, faculty and staff, although there are plans underway to rectify the situation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep up the good work.

I have been working at Catholic University

    Pros

Academic freedom allows for a great flexibility and creativity. CUA has a relatively low stress environment, a strong commitment to student learning, energetic students, and friendly atmosphere. Washington DC is a dynamic city and has lots to offer intellectually.

    Cons

CUA salaries are below market levels, esp. considering cost-of-living in DC. The health benefits are awful and it seems the university changes HMOs every 2-3 years. The university seems to be boot-strapping at every corner. There are buildings that are in disarray and go unused for 5-10 years. Senior management seems out-of-touch with reality. Faculty size has decreased over the past 5-10 years while student population continues to grow dramatically. Established faculty with renown reputations and research programs are allowed to leave while young faculty are recruited. Seems many programs hit the re-start button every 3-4 years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in the people capital. A university is a place for learning... it's not a for-profit organization. To build excellence, you need excellent faculty. Priorities are set with allocation of resources, not with rhetoric.
