I have been working at Cengage Learning full-time

    Pros

Cengage recognizes it has to change while it still has the resources to do so. It is investing heavily in MindTap and integration with leading educational solutions. Simply being a publishing company won't cut it anymore. Like the name says, it's about learning. Great work/life balance. Decent benefits with a couple noteworthy ones, as well.

    Cons

Still too many layers of management, although that is changing. Many long-time employees are still thinking and acting like they're running a publishing company. Some middle managers try to justify their existence by creating turmoil while adding little to no value. Salaries competitive, but not outstanding, maybe slightly above median.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Top management: Get rid of much of the middle management. Middle management: Protect your jobs by becoming effective at moving the company forward, not by trying to preserve the status quo.

I have been working at Cengage Learning full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The environment is laid back and flexible. The people are those I would be friends with in real life. That's important when you spend most of your waking hours at a place. Benefits are generous.

    Cons

Pay is too low. The culture is moving slowly away from a hierarchical, siloe'd, communication controlled quagmire into something more flexible and dynamic.
