I worked at Cengage Learning full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

You have flexability in this job, you get a company car. You also don't work on Holidays.

Cons

Even though you might think you won't work in summers, you do. You end up always having so much work to do you can never relax. They also give crazy quotas without considering factors such as schools cutting enrollments etc.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop with a once a year bonus do a quarterly bonus so people will continue to want to work even if they know they won't hit there yearly quota.

Can we stick with one policy for more than a month?

I have been working at Cengage Learning as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The people who actually do the work, the boots on the ground folks, are just a delight. Upper level management seems to be inhabiting a world of their own making that has little relevance to what's really going on in the work place or in the schools they are supposed to be catering to.

    Cons

The company seems to be in chaos, policies change practically by the month with no one seemingly thinking ahead except of course to claim that their digital solutions will bring world peace and solve the problem of world hunger. People who actually know about education and the educational market don't seem to be involved in the creation of the digital products Cengage, like every other publisher, insists are the wave of the future. Meanwhile student surveys keep pointing out that students still want text BOOKs. What they don't want are the ridiculous prices. Mind Tap may solve some of their problems if it every makes it to market, but we have been hearing about for three years now and it still isn't available.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop outsourcing everything to incompetents. In the end you will pay more to fix up their errors. Let people who know something about the education market and who know real instructors have input into your products and marketing.

I worked at Cengage Learning full-time

    Pros

Hard working reps, good benefits, work/life balance

    Cons

Lack of direction, inferior technology products, lack of vision, ego-driven new upper management,

This company is a mitigated disaster, and with constant reorgs, they can never get anything to take hold. Turning it into Pearson Lite (because, let's face it, that's what they've just done) won't help anything. Taking the chainsaw to 200 reps and manager in one day (many of them successful and experienced) will come back and bite them. Monster-sized territories will not help defeat the competition.

Many people who were let go during the Cengage Chainsaw Massacre of 2013 feel like they are the lucky ones. I can't say I disagree.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop restructuring every 6 months. Treat experienced reps with respect instead of insulting them by letting them go and keeping rookie reps everywhere.
