Former Employee - Anonymous Employee in Farmington Hills, MI

I worked at Cengage Learning full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Some of the smartest people I have ever worked with!
    Mostly a nice working environment.
Flexible work schedule, depending on your manager.
    Decent benefits.

    Cons

Horrible management! If they don't like you, watch out! You'll be heading for the unemployment office!
Promotions are given to friends, not to most qualified individuals. Therefore, you end up with Admin Assistants getting promoted to management over other, more highly qualified, candidates.
    Pay is below average.
HR is NOT there to help the employee! Only covers the backsides of the poor managers.
Product development is too slow, even after adopting "Agile".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If Michael Hansen actually sees this, he needs to go to Farmington Hills and clean up the management. There are first and second line managers who really don't have a clue on how to lead, motivate, and grow their assigned employees. There are a couple of Director/VP level who, while knowledgeable in the industry, are clueless on how to lead effectively.

Current Employee - Assistant to the Content Management Department in Boston, MA

I have been working at Cengage Learning full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Discounted yoga classes once a week. The Boston location has a shuttle from South Station and one from North Station. There is a workout room and a cafe on the first floor of the building. The medical/dental benefits are decent. Management holds meetings to keep employees updated on major decisions.

    Cons

The pay is fairly low. There is an opportunity to give feedback on upper-level management, but not directly on one's supervisor.
