I worked at Cengage Learning full-time (more than an year)

Pros

You get a Paycheck and car.

Cons

All new management. some with no experience in higher ed. And none who care about their people. Territories changed every few months while management fiddles around with trying to make the numbers look better to save their jobs. Huge layoffs over the past year. An almost impossible environment to grow sales.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

be real about the goals you set for sales. How do you expect 5 or 6% growth in a company where sales were down 14% last year??

I worked at Cengage Learning full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Okay pay and benefits. Some departments more flexible than others. including some telecommuting.

    Cons

Company is in a constant state of flux with leadership, reorgs, title changes, and general corporate disorganization. Some departments less proactive and flexible. Departments that need the change never seem to get it. Static mobility.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get yourselves together and take a hard look at some of the managers that shouldn't be there, as well as the employees who don't pull their weight. There are a number of long time employees who should be cut due to their overall incompetence, yet seem to hang on with cockroach like zeal.

Shooting yourself in the foot isn't good, whether the bullet be analog or digital.

I have been working at Cengage Learning full-time

    Pros

Flexible hours, casual dress, some awesome products, some very good people, a history of success

    Cons

Politics-driven business decisions, marginalizing people who should be key players, belief that adding "digital" to job titles magically confers a skill set, rushed projects that are neither innovative nor exceptional, clinging to the analog-based publishing paradigm of outsourcing as much as possible when digital products are always custom-crafted and require custom training, low pay keeps away the best tech talent

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I want this company to succeed, and I know you are under great pressure to excel in a hurry. Draw on the knowledge of those who have succeeded before and do not sacrifice quality or complexity for quick-to-market products that will delight no one. Do not place people in positions of accountability or authority unless they have a proven track record in the digital space. Discard previous tribal politics and move forward based on proven abilities and knowledge.
