I worked at Cengage Learning as a contractor (More than 10 years)

Pros

This was once a great place to work. Many smart, creative and talented people passionate about writing and editing were happy to be there, even for low pay. They were highly engaged.

Cons

Now the level of disengagement seems very high. People are pretty checked out and don't seem to feel ownership of the content. Emails are forwarded around and around with new questions in them that were quite obviously answered in the chain. When you read through all of the emails in the thread, you can see this happening multiple times. Either people can't read or they don't feel like thinking? Emails are often ignored. Highly political environment. PMs do not understand content (for example, they are not software users but are managing software titles). New editors and authors are not trained and they do not understand Cengage processes and standards, so the creative people working with the administrative people and vice versa is very difficult. Everything is over email and planning is terrible. There is no central database for the titles, they are in spreadsheets, different ones, created by the PMs. The amount of remote workers was always high. However, over the past few years almost everyone worked remotely. The office environment was not healthy and people did not want to go in. Working entirely over email is very challenging especially as a contractor. I was not told what was happening. I found out about the bankruptcy filing from a contact outside of the company! That was the last straw for me!

Advice to Management

Go below middle managers and talk to employees to see what's really going on.

I worked at Cengage Learning full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of benefits: small perks like cookies in the cafeteria, transportation discounts. Pretty decent health care, sick pay, and vacation package too.

    Cons

Definitely bottom-line oriented. On the editorial side, the only thing that matters is pushing through the product as quickly as possible. Editors are given too much work.

    Advice to Management

Acknowledge large workloads and hire more employees or freelancers.

I worked at Cengage Learning full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

You get a Paycheck and car.

    Cons

All new management. some with no experience in higher ed. And none who care about their people. Territories changed every few months while management fiddles around with trying to make the numbers look better to save their jobs. Huge layoffs over the past year. An almost impossible environment to grow sales.

    Advice to Management

be real about the goals you set for sales. How do you expect 5 or 6% growth in a company where sales were down 14% last year??
