A once great place ruined by mismanagement.

I worked at Cengage Learning as a contractor (more than 10 years)

Pros

This was once a great place to work. Many smart, creative and talented people passionate about writing and editing were happy to be there, even for low pay. They were highly engaged.

Cons

Now the level of disengagement seems very high. People are pretty checked out and don't seem to feel ownership of the content. Emails are forwarded around and around with new questions in them that were quite obviously answered in the chain. When you read through all of the emails in the thread, you can see this happening multiple times. Either people can't read or they don't feel like thinking?

Emails are often ignored. Highly political environment. PMs do not understand content (for example, they are not software users but are managing software titles). New editors and authors are not trained and they do not understand Cengage processes and standards, so the creative people working with the administrative people and vice versa is very difficult. Everything is over email and planning is terrible. There is no central database for the titles, they are in spreadsheets, different ones, created by the PMs.

The amount of remote workers was always high. However, over the past few years almost everyone worked remotely. The office environment was not healthy and people did not want to go in. Working entirely over email is very challenging especially as a contractor. I was not told what was happening. I found out about the bankruptcy filing from a contact outside of the company! That was the last straw for me!

I have been working at Cengage Learning full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Quality content, talented and friendly employees

    Cons

Leadership is made up of idea people with little skill in executing. Mr. Hansen is very inspirational, down to Earth, and if the reality matched what he presented at Town Hall meetings and other venues, this company would be a force to be reckoned with Yet the management team he brought on doesn't mirror his values day to day and instill the opposite sense of where the company is headed. A true go-forward strategy is replaced by constant reorgs and a culture centered around the fear of losing one's job in the seemingly arbitrary shuffling of chairs, When groups or individuals are eliminated, there are seldom plans to fill in the gaps they leave. Strategic decisions are made by individuals with a high level of domain knowledge but no product development knowledge and vice versa. The strategy seems to be throw everything against the wall and see what sticks and keep arbitrarily cutting groups mid-execution of a plan before there is any chance success could be measured. Morale across the board is at an all time low and the company is rapidly bleeding its top talent of those who can execute and deliver products to market.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend more time on Product Strategy and less looking for internal scapegoats and causing attrition due to constant course corrections. Workers need to believe there is an overall strategy and there is a reason for it. Reorgs and course corrections every few months send the complete opposite message.
