Pros – The Federal Government is known for having a good benefit package. There is a good work/life balance, but if you are ambitious and looking to get ahead....forget it! A job at CMS is perfect if you are in a position where your income is not the sole source for your family and you want an easy job with lots of time to disappear from your desk. CMS is perfect if don't want to be tied down to a career that requires more then 5 - 6 hours a day.
Cons – The federal government pay scale is not equal to private industries.
Senior Management is too political to effectively manage the agency. They give no consideration to the employee's morale. Senior management does not recognize the staff for their hard work. It seems the only feedback employee's receive from management is negative.
It is very difficult to get a promotion at CMS. You have to know someone and play the game to get anywhere.
The federal employees have no say in their working environment at CMS. The Union lost a battle with Senior Management and the employees lost a lot of benefits and rights. The Union is worthless.
There is no forward-thinking at CMS. Employee's who want to have a challenging career will find it difficult to keep up with their counterparts outside the government because of the bureaucracy that exists at CMS.
Advice to Senior Management – Fire current management and hire new mid/senior management.
