    Pros

As a teaching assistant in the English department, my experience was positive. There is plenty of support for TA's who are new to teaching, and a lot of leeway for those who have taught in the past and want a little more control over their classes. I came out of the program with invaluable professional contacts as well as friends I expect to stay in contact with for years.

    Cons

The distribution of TAships can be haphazard--one TA was assigned to a different department at the last minute (and therefore wasn't enrolled in the ENG 510 TA colloquium), another wasn't notified that a TAship was available until halfway through the quarter, and the policies surrounding non-resident TAs are murky at best. In other words, the logistics can be a real headache.

    Advice to Management

There are a lot of changes happening at the level of university administration and, as a result, administrative processes are either at a standstill or VERY hit or miss. (I.e., Processing funding or reimbursement requests, Behaviors of Concern reports, term switches, etc.) Take some time to address the smaller infrastructural problems and, in the future, reconsider the viability of making so many huge changes all at once.

  2. Poor Leadership

    Pros

The work environment is harmonious. Most administrators try to do the right thing and make ethical decisions. Most also treat employees fairly and with a lot of respect.

    Cons

CWU hires too many relatives. Nepotism is a real problem and has begun to erode the integrity of the university. People are put in positions even though they are not qualified. Some employees are reluctant to complain about the poor treatment they receive for fear of losing their job. There is a lack of accountability at the highest levels of administration.

    Advice to Management

Hold managers accountable. When the leadership hear about employee problems, make sure to address them promptly and impartially. This is not being done currently.
