Current Contractor - Contract Programmer in Kansas City, MO

I have been working at Cerner as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

If you want to brush up on a foreign language(s) this is the place for you. At least on the Engineering campus English is rarely spoken.

    Cons

Pretty must all the stories are true. They like hiring extremely young foreign nationals who will be easy to intimidate and abuse. Then throw them to the wolfs and burning them out until they quit. The EDI group I was in had four US citizens out of about 15. Hard to keep an accurate head count given that they had over 100% turn over.

The culture generates a lot of failure by design. The focus on cheap inexperienced programers, rushed projects with little to no requirements, little to no testing, little to no integration testing, and little to know interactions with other dept. results in a lot of missed deadlines, bug ridden services that can not scale to the levels they need. Management views these systemic issues as the fault of employees. They will shamelessly rant about how the entire group is failing oblivious that if the entire group is failing it is probably more an issue of leadership or communication.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need organization and structure. A Power Point slide with three built points does not qualify as software requirements. Also if an entire group is failing then the root cause is much more likely a lack of leadership or communication.

Current Employee - Software Engineer in Kansas City, MO

I have been working at Cerner full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Compensation is decent for Kansas City (If you negotiate in the beginning).
Flexible work hours. (Again, this is team specific)
Manager acts like a friend outside the office and is a nice guy in general.
Work is challenging and interesting, you learn new things everyday.
Free gym, if you work out.

    Cons

Promotions are difficult to get if don't know the right people.
    Pay increments aren't great.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invent more in the existing talent than hiring newer people and paying them high salaries.
