Schwab has been a great place to grow -- I'm no longer sure it's the right place to stay.

Pros

- Stability - Benefits - The People - Commitment to Development - Commitment to Clients - Commitment to Improve Employee Engagement - The Location in SF / Facilities

Cons

- Collaboration to a fault / too much effort to get buy-in from everyone to be nice and keep partners happy - Lack of Career Development Opportunities - Limited Bonus Potential for Less than Top Performers - Culture has been lacking a soul for some time - Adoption of cutting edge technology feels very slow - Lackluster stock performance - Questionable ability for middle managers to effectively manage their people, especially average performers

Advice to Management

- You're saying the right things and spending lots of time on fine-tuning senior management and strategic plans - Unless more excitement is generated at a visceral level with staff-level employees, you'll have less than stellar employees executing your plans - As much as engagement is solid and improving overall, it feels like you're neutralizing engagement of your top staff - These top performers will continue to leave unless even more focus and recognition is placed on them now - There is real risk in neutralizing the soul of the company beyond attrition - It doesn't feel broken, but it doesn't feel exciting -- and your top performers need this

    Pros

Paid time to study for licenses. You learn a ton about the business.

    Cons

Call center environment. Most of the financial recognition goes to the top five percent of performers.

    Advice to Management

Make it a place people want to stay at with better financial perks so people won't just get their licenses and leave.

  2. Very structured work place with a corporate feel.

    Pros

Great technology and back office support. Great products and value to clients. Brokers are empowered to make decisions to satisfy clients.

    Cons

Doesn't seem to value independent / creative thinking. Because Schwab is such a big company, in order to make things scalable, they need/try to control a little too much.

    Advice to Management

On the branch level, try not too worry so much about "checking boxes" as far as productivity goes and focus more on business that gets closed. For example, don't worry about the number of daily contacts, but focus instead on the "quality" of those contacts In the call centers, work on the energy there. It has a sweat shop feel.
