Pros

Good strong corp of steady employees..., the ones who are left. Employees sincerely have the company's well being at heart. Leadership is doing the best that it can given it's challenges.

Cons

Good employees are being subjected and eliminated by a GE type employee assessment model. This new process is now the vehicle that is being used to reduce headcount and is its only value. It is a poor means to fairly evaluate employees' performance. It creates an environment of employees doing only what is required to have a good PA and Peer Review. It completely eliminates employee's desire to help one another. The environment is now adversarial vs. entrepreneurial. Additionally, an atmosphere of “Bullying Bosses” is allowed. This is true if the manager appears to be delivering results. Managers, having a history of bullying employees, have had records of this behavior minimalized or expunged altogether from their HR records.

Advice to Management

- Discard the peer review process and standardize roles and responsibilities. - Remove managers who are Bullying Bosses and replace them with one who can lead..., not push.

    Pros

The Science group has lots of interesting projects.

    Cons

This is a newly formed group, which I felt moved like a rudderless ship. It is dominated by MBA culture. The name SCIENCE is only to impress people. The people running the show, either have little knowledge on how science or scientific projects are done, or what takes to. Strangely enough, the company which had so far been doing '0' analytics, expects analytical projects to be done at the speed of cooking a dish. Very poor in conceiving the whole project in terms of data availability, meaning of the data, data preparation, and their importance to start with, let aside the analytical concepts. The attitude is use SAS and Bingo(!) results are out. No time to think, if the concepts are robust, and the results are going have long-term validity. If you are hired as a consultant: the recruiter will tell you that you may be made permanent in say, 6 months! Uhm! Very Careful, they may fire you with a few hours notice long before your contract period is over! Well, if you are desperate, do not stop the job hunting process! In my case both the modelers fired the same time: the boss says: Apologies: we should have first recruited some people (more MBAs?) who could supervise your analytical work!

    Advice to Management

First try to understand how scientific projects are done. Plan the projects properly and initially try to solve the problem locally before involving off-shore researchers. Long meetings with vague agendas involving large number of people only waste time and money. And, if in a meeting on an analytical project there are more than one or two non-hands-ons, there is some thing wrong. By the way, the people you put on the top: have they any publication record in real-life/industrial processes since they left their universities?

I worked at Chartis Insurance Company part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

good management, good place to learn many different fields of insurance, good compensation, good benefits. It's a demanding company, but as it is demanding of you, it shapes you up into a very knowledgable and team oriented employee.

    Cons

like many companies, is currently going through a downsizing. It's also evident at times that advancement comes with who you know and not always on what you know

    Advice to Management

treat your employees like they're a valuable resource to the company, not parts that can be easily replaced
