Pros
Good basic training, excellent benefits (access to major medical for PT associates, amazing discount). Quality merchandise, commitment to the customer. Employees are empowered to help customers more than at many retailers. The company definitely promotes from within and recognizes top sellers. We have processes for getting ideas and suggestions to corporate that are acknowleged and ideas implemented receive compensation.
Cons
Dissatisfaction with individual managers. Policies and procedures change often and the staff don't always get proper training on the procedures. Store specials aren't always in the system, associates have to remember them and this can cause chaos at the cash wrap. Top sellers are excused on bad habits/poor work ethic. The bonus structure makes it difficult to earn commissions. Wasteful packaging items between distribution/stores.
Advice to Senior Management
Solicit manager feedback from store associates about management style at review time (anonymously), rather than just looking at numbers. Better training and communication with promotional changes. Update the computer system so that associates aren't responsible for remember what is on POS every day.
