I worked at Children's Hospital Boston

Pros

Boss (PI) extremely encouraging, skilled and motivated. Culture and atmosphere of the hospital and staff very supportive, warm and welcoming. Felt like a community. Longwood Medical Area is also a great place to work and be involved with on a daily basis.

Cons

Would have liked to been paid more, but that is an across the board complaint for any institution. Training modules were somewhat annoying, but super minor complaint (kind of fishing for things to say here)

I have been working at Children's Hospital Boston

    Pros

    World class facility
    High profile research mission
    Good benefits package
    Strong academic links
    Strong pediatric sub and ultra-specialties
    Good CEO and COO
    Excellent preclinical research infrastructure
    Diverse research portfolio
    Intramural funding and support strong
    Some excellent department/division heads
Visible acknowledgement of support staff such as lab techs, environmental services etc

    Cons

Complacent culture "we are the best"
    Low compensation for junior staff
Needs to work harder for underserved and minority communities
"Foundation" structure encourages good department heads but leaves weak and/or incompetent division/department heads to do a lot of damage
Arrogant and complacent scientific leadership at VP level- should be replaced by real scientist/s
Clinical research other than cardiology and oncology/hematology very weak and relegated to second division compared to basic/preclinical sciences
Poor scientific and clinical mentorship in a number of residency programs

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to more junior staff and faculty
Give more emphasis to clinical research in the research mission
More focus on health disparities in economic, ethnic and social minorities
Have more rigorous evaluation of executive performance in the Foundations
    Competitive compensation
Have some humility and willingness to learn from good performance in other institutions outside Harvard

I have been working at Children's Hospital Boston

    Pros

The overall mission of Children's Hospital Boston is to ultimately cure child illness. I am proud to be a small part of the hospital because of that. The employee benefits are also amazing. I really like the people I work with within my lab.

    Cons

I feel like the inter-lab community is lacking. Rarely do I have conversations with people in other labs. The administrative staff is wonderful and knowledgeable though.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would definitely make more of an effort to increase the sense of community, at least within the laboratories.
