I have been working at Children's National Health System

Pros

The best reasons to work at Children's National would have to be the kids and families that you serve. Even if you are a member of Environmental Services, it's easier to do your job knowing that a child benefits from clean bathrooms. Likewise, in my field it's beneficial to know that even if you are simply writing a press release, the exposure can help with getting more donors, which in turn, is more money for better technology.

Cons

The hierarchical society at work. Also, it's spread out in so many different locations, you have people doing whatever they want, which is a PR person's nightmare!

Advice to ManagementAdvice

To make themselves more accessible to their employees. To not assume that they know the best way to do something.

Taking care of children is a great mission; unfortunately, top-heavy management tends to get in the way

I have been working at Children's National Health System

    Pros

The ability to interact with great physicians, caretakers, and families and to provide patient care.

    Cons

Top-heavy, overpaid management that turns a children's hospital into a bureaucratic machine. The disorganized/dysfunctional IT department fully adheres to that management style, resulting in a poorly maintained infrastructure that is constantly prone to outages and downtime. No other business would be able to survive with this IT and managerial model - people at the top get paid too much to do too little, while patients, clinicians and staff suffer the consequences.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Need to completely revamp IT, including most of its leadership
    - Need to pare down the number of managers and people who obstruct innovation and interfere with the care of patients
    - Streamline all parts of the system - from patient intake to care to discharge. There's obvious bloat throughout the system.

Boom or bust. Years of the big gifts are great, other years are not.

I have been working at Children's National Health System

    Pros

    Great mission and compelling stories
Opportunity to visit the hospital is a great motivator.

    Cons

Executive Staff are focused only on getting large gifts. High stress, often unnecessary. Administrative support is poor.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop the roller coaster revenue rides. Focus on a full range of annual gifts and not only on principle gifts.
