The tropical location makes it worth it (for a little while). (Actual location: Kwajalein Atoll)

I have been working at Chugach Alaska full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Opportunity to experience a remote tropical island; great people;

depending on your circumstance: may qualify for tax-free status; relocation (to/from) and housing expenses paid; also added annual leave and return ticket (equivalent) to point of hire, each year;

must love water sports (sailing, diving, jet skis, beach).

Sunny and 85 degrees - every day (8 degrees north of the equator)

Cons

pay ranges are below industry standards (see pros). most positions are 'unaccompanied' (you won't be allowed to bring the wife, kids or your dog 'spot').
Remote location precludes severe trauma-level health care (you'd better not be one hamburger short of a heart attack - but then you have to pass a physical, so...)

Advice to ManagementAdvice

improve travel benefits (even paradise gets old); improve QOL for unaccompanied personnel.

    I have been working at Chugach Alaska full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Coffee shop on the first floor at the corporate office in Anchorage is convenient and locally owned.

    Cons

    Management lacks innovation, doesn't listen to subject matter experts, and managers, especially subsidiary and corporate executives, are selected from a pool of insiders who protect each other at the expense of the company and other employees. They know one trick--government contracting exploiting the Native corporation exclusions to laws designed to help small businesses--and now that that trick isn't working their revenue is falling.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Bring in some outside talent with proper credentials and experience, and then listen to them, don't fire them when they tell you something you don't want to know.

    Chugach Management Alaska is a great place if you have no desire for upward mobility.

    I have been working at Chugach Alaska

    Pros

    There are some very smart dediacated people who work for this company. Management will overlook many ethic and work related violations in order to not fire someone. At lower levels there is not a lot of accountability so you are free to do most anything you please on company time.

    Cons

    There are no periodic reviews or raises, no training or upward mobility. Communication between all levels is lacking. There is no company or corporate pride, or appreciation for what their employees do.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Periodic reviews should be annual at minimum, and training opportunities for employees, who have shown solid work ethic, to be able to move into other positions. Their budgeting practices from top to bottom need to be overhauled and the HR department needs ethics training.
