I have been working at Ciber

Pros

Good access to Online Technical resources. Understanding management team in terms of personal time offs and emergencies. Good team work environment is promoted.

Cons

Not the best benefits package. Trainings are for the most part covered by the employee unless the employee signs paper to stay with the company for a ridiculous number of years when compared with total cost of the training/exam.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve benefits package when it comes to trainings.

    Pros

CIBER is well positioned in the market because the company's rates are lower than top tier consulting firms, but the scope of projects they handle is the same.

    Cons

Very decentralized. Weak marketing, resulting in minimal presence in customers' and prospects' awareness. Significant variations in quality among the branches and practice groups. Some are world-class, some are a joke. Senior management only watches the dollars. Sees little reason to invest in sales, internal training.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

For long-term growth and stability, start looking at three issues: First, a more professional and consistent sales approach that is used throughout the company. You have some good teams, but the innovations they are making aren't being shared. Second, invest in marketing the firm. Few of our prospects have ever heard of CIBER. What kind of $2 billion company approaches the market in stealth mode? A cheap one, maybe? One that's being led by techies who don't understand the importance of good marketing. Third, invest in internal training and provide greater opportunities for lateral movement within the company. People feel stifled in terms of their career paths, because they tend to be pigeon-holed by technology area. Good people should be able to grow and evolve, even across geographic and practice lines.

    Pros

The salary was nice, although after dividing it by all the unpaid overtime, it wasn't that special.

There were some good people there, but they weren't supported by good management. There's still a lot of talent at the company, but I don't think it's being well developed, used or rewarded.

    Cons

Managers "teased" (or outright insulted) team members in group meetings. Individual meetings with managers tended to start with the manager saying "I heard that you..." and following it with an accusation of wanting to leave the company.

New ideas were met with hostility and actual, literal sneers.

No training provided whatsoever beyond the bare minimum to meet legal requirements for handling certain documents or using the timecard system.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get some proper management training. Learn to treat employees like human beings with worthwhile skills, not just cogs in a machine. "Sharpen the saw"; even cogs in a machine need maintenance and repair, and human beings need it even more.
